Is it normal for Windows XP to update every time you use your computer?

I've noticed it that in the last 7 days, each time I shut down my PC I always see "turn off your computer so that Windows could install needed updates" right below the "Turn Off" button. I use Avast Anti-Virus Free Ed and Spybot: Search %26 Destroy anti-spyware and nothing seems to be the problem. Do you think it's normal for Windows to keep updating daily... even though I already installed the latest service packs and security patches? Your response is highly appreciated. Thanks!

There has been a rash of 'criticial' updates for XP lately so it is just one of times where you are better if you are able to let updates go on than ignore them.

Sometimes, it has to go through a few boot cycles for all the files to go into correct places etc. it needs to get itself right and will settle down.

Also probably because SP3 is nearly due for release.

Yes, It is. I have also suffered that problem. It got irritated many times. It is because Microsoft release patches almost everyday. And automatic updates check for updates daily. You problem can be cured by changing the automatic updates time from daily to weekly. You can also turn automatic updates off. if you don't know how to do this visit microsoft.com or email me.
You can and should probably contact Microsoft for support on this issue, but normally this is not normal. There may be an issue in your computer that causes it not to accept the update, and it attempts to re-install the update. If you right click on my computer, click on Manage, and click event viewer, the overall contents may show information that explains what is going on.
Lot of times a security patch don't fully download and install, so it will keep trying daily.
if you have automatic updates set and you havent updated in a long time, yes it will update when there are updates available.easiest way to find out,hit start/control panel/add remove progs/ and make sure the "show updates" box is checked at the top of the page, then scroll down and look for the dates the updates were installed.
No not every day. Mine does it once a month or so.
Windows just checks whether your computer needs Windows updates, if they are available, it downloads them and installs them. Otherwise you will not get that message while shutting down your computer.

Your computer's updates are from antivirus, spybot etc...

Not really Windows.
Click on the icon and see what update it is trying to install.

Typically, updates are released on specific Tuesdays ... and sometimes if an update is not able to install, it would keep prompting and trying.

You could go to the MS KB and get the specific update exe and do the whole thing yourself. That should sort it out.
